The kids are really enjoying the multiple strategies for multiplication and now division. I apologize to the parents, I know the unfamiliar and change can be hard. Our first thought is to teach the old fashion way, or our generation's way of solving. Please allow your child to show you a new strategy or two. Common core requires that students can illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/ or area models.

Go Gold!

From Coach Miller

September is Childhood
Cancer Awareness Month!
LET’S WHIP
CHILDHOOD CANCER!
Childhood Cancer has hit very close to home with our Sonoma family. Last
year we lost one of our very own second graders, Max Marlin to cancer, and
now we have another one of our very own staff member’s son and first
grader, Jaeton Monroe, fighting this horrible disease.
Because childhood cancer is more rare than other cancers there hasn't been
a lot of money allocated towards finding a cure. But we can change that. We
want to challenge Sonoma students to raise $1,000 to go towards
whipping childhood cancer.
On September 2nd-12th, we are going to collect coins from our
Sonoma students to try and reach our $1,000 goal. If
Sonoma reaches the goal, then our students will get to throw
a pie into our principals’ faces!
Bring in your coins and let’s help whip childhood cancer! The money raised will
go to the UNM Cancer Center Pediatric unit.
We also challenge you to join the whip cancer project where you fill a pie pan
up with whip cream and smash it into your face all in the name of whipping
childhood cancer. Then, call out your friends to do the same and post
somewhere for others to see. Go to the link on Facebook called “Whipping
Childhood Cancer”.

Settling In...

Whew! Time is already flying by!  Students completed assessments last week to give us a baseline so we can hit the ground running. The kids are also working together to create presentations to convince me (and Ms. Galaz) which would be the best classroom pet. I know what my favorite is but, we will have to see how convincing their research is! Students are researching bearded dragons, HEDGEHOGS, hamsters, fish, and turtles. They created the grading rubric and set the expectations high for their presentations. Teams have been researching costs (of the animal, food, and habitat), habitats/cages requirements, eating habits, health and care and also looking at pros and cons of the pet in the classroom. I am excited to see and share their final products soon!

The End of Summer is Near

Summer is almost over and I am SUPER excited! I have missed all of my students so much! This year we will be looping together to 4th grade. We will also have a few new students joining us, as we lost a few to new schools and even different states. This semester we are lucky enough to have a student teacher joining us, Ms. Rosie Melendez. I met her yesterday and can't wait to start team teaching with her. We all have so much to learn this year and I can't wait to get started!
I have been working hard to make our room an even more comfortable, inspiring learning environment, including more books and a new couch!

Thursday August 7th from 4 - 6 pm, Sonoma will be having an ICE CREAM SOCIAL!!!!! Come see our new classroom and check out all of the exciting changes and "improvements". :)

Enjoy the last two weeks of your summer!!!!

P.S. If you are thinking about joining me in or continuing on Battle of the Books this year I hope you have started reading! Remember to write good questions as you read to help us study the novels. I have attached a page to my blog with current BoB news, book list etc.. We will rock state again this year!!
